Privacy Policy
Privacy Statement
At Africa Media Trust (AMT), we recognize the importance of protecting your data and are committed to safeguarding your privacy. This statement outlines how we collect, use, and protect your information, as well as your rights. If you have any questions after reading this statement, please get in touch with our Data Protection Officer (DPO) using the details provided at the end.
Our Commitment
AMT builds digital communities that drive positive change. We empower young people to actively shape a more inclusive society by supporting our partners in creating online platforms and strategies for content, engagement, and moderation. These platforms enable open, honest conversations on sensitive topics such as pleasurable sex, civic participation, and more. By providing access to reliable information and amplifying youth voices, we help them play a meaningful role in their communities.
Our Approach to Data
We follow the principle of minimal data processing—we only collect and use data necessary to improve our programs. Most of our data processing is based on legitimate interest, such as analyzing content engagement to optimize impact. In some cases, like surveys, we request your consent before collecting data.
When You Contact Us
If you reach out via our platforms, we use your information solely to respond to or follow up on your inquiry. We do not use this data for any other purpose.
Types of Data We Use
Platform Analytics
We analyze user interactions on our platforms (websites, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn) to understand what content resonates. We collect device information, visit timestamps, and engagement metrics (likes, shares, comments) to tailor content to local contexts and user needs—based on legitimate interest.
Surveys
Surveys help us create relevant content and evaluate our impact. We may conduct these ourselves or with partners. Participation is voluntary, and we always request your consent. If you provide contact details, we may use them to:
- Invite you to follow-up surveys
- Measure changes over time
- Share final reports
- Notify you if you win a prize
Survey results may be shared with our communities and used for internal and donor reporting.
Reporting
We generate anonymous, aggregated reports using data from our platforms and third parties. These reports help us:
- Demonstrate impact on donors
- Inform participants and beneficiaries
- Attract new partners
- Improve our strategies and content
Beneficiaries and partners include civil society organizations, media, government bodies, and other stakeholders.
Customer Relationship Management
We collect and manage contact details (organization name, contact person, email, phone) to build and maintain partnerships, and to support platform development and funding.
Communication
If you contact us via email, phone, or social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn), we use your information only to respond to your inquiry.
Newsletter
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we will store your email address. You can unsubscribe at any time.
Photos and Videos
We take photos and videos at events to showcase our work. We always request consent before using any images or footage for marketing purposes.
Website Analytics
We use visit data to understand how users find and interact with our websites. This helps us improve performance and visibility. See our cookie policy for more details.
Business Operations
We process contact, payment, and communication data for routine business activities like invoicing, bookkeeping, and correspondence.
Job Applications
When you apply for a position at AMT, your data will be processed either by us or, in some cases, by a recruitment agency. If a third-party agency is involved, this will be clearly stated in the job advertisement. We process your data based on your consent and retain your application and related information for up to one year after the position has been filled.
Data Sharing
We do not share your data with third parties unless legally required. We work with specialized ICT providers under strict data processing agreements. These providers act solely on our instructions and are bound by confidentiality.
In cases where we collaborate with independent contractors, temporary staff, or partners who are not classified as data processors but operate under our authority, we ensure confidentiality through formal agreements.
Data Storage and Retention
We retain personal data only as long as necessary for its intended purpose. Retention periods depend on the type of data, the service or product involved, and what is reasonable from the perspective of the data subject. All data is stored on secure, cloud-based servers located in Europe.
Examples of Retention Periods:
- Platform Data: Retained for up to 7 years after a project ends to support analysis and content evaluation.
- Job Applications: Retained for the duration of the recruitment process, up to a maximum of one year. If we wish to keep your data for future opportunities, we will request your explicit consent.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access, correct, or delete your data
- Restrict or object to data processing
- Request data portability in applicable cases
We do not engage in automated decision-making or profiling.
If you are dissatisfied with how we handle your data, please let us know. You also have the right to file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority.
Exercising Your Rights
To protect your privacy, we verify your identity before processing any rights-related requests. This may involve requesting additional information to confirm your identity.
Data Security
We take data protection seriously and implement physical, technical, and administrative safeguards to secure your information. Our systems are regularly updated and tested, and we take extra precautions when vulnerabilities arise.
Only authorized employees with a legitimate need can access your data. All staff are trained in confidentiality and data protection.
Privacy Statement Updates
As our services evolve, we may update this Privacy Statement. Any changes will be announced on our website. If updates significantly change the purpose of data processing and are based on your consent, we will seek your renewed approval.
